Not only a gifted neuro-oncologist. . .

Not only a gifted neuro-oncologist. . .

The AdventHealth Medical Group (AHMG) is blessed with hundreds of talented physicians, APPs, and clinical teams who help us extend the healing ministry of Christ. They are impressive, but then you hear about Dr. Herbert Newton, who is not only a gifted neuro-oncologist and the Director of AHMG’s Neuro-Oncology Center, but also a skilled bass guitar player, I am in awe.

Not only has Dr. Newton enjoyed a 30-year medical career, including a full academic career at Ohio State University Medical Center, he turned his love of music (he spent ten years as a child playing classical piano and trombone) into a fun and philanthropic pastime when his children relit his musical spark. Both musicians, they inspired him to take up the electric bass guitar in his late 40s. Within a couple years, he was playing in a band in Dublin, Ohio, alongside his wife, Cindy, who sang vocals.

After coming to AdventHealth in Orlando, Dr. Newton started his own band, “Stone Lotus,” a classic rock cover band that includes two other AdventHealth physicians – an emergency physician (Dr. Mark Kruger) and a vascular surgeon (Dr. Robert Winter). Stone Lotus played at Orlando’s last two Docs Rock for Neurofibromatosis (NF) fundraising events helping raise more than $45,000 to benefit the Neurofibromatosis Network. They have also been involved with Melissa’s Race, a 5k fundraising event that raised $65,000 to benefit the AdventHealth Cancer Institute for brain cancer research – set to play for their fall event in September.

Dr. Newton says rock and roll has been good to him and he loves when they play in front of a crowd. You can catch them playing around the Central Florida area. They suggest you follow and “Like” them on Facebook here.

We welcome you to join Dr. Newton of AdventHealth Orlando and the NF Network in 2020 at the 3rd Annual Docs Rock for NF, a Benefit Concert for Neurofibromatosis. Stay tuned for further information here.
