NF1 Cutaneous Neurofibroma Study: Optical Imaging of cNFs

NF1 Research Study:
Detection of Early-Stage Cutaneous Neurofibromas Invisible on the Skin Surface

 

You or your children (10 years or older) are invited to participate in a clinical study which aims to detect early-stage cutaneous neurofibromas (cNF) using noninvasive optical imaging technologies - before they become visible on the skin surface. Early detection of cNF can possibly identify targets for selective laser treatment and monitor the response of cNF to non-surgical therapies. If you agree to participate in the study, your chest, back and forearms will be imaged with devices that are similar to a digital camera or an ultrasound probe. The researchers will learn more about the difference in optical properties and vasculature density between cNF and the surrounding skin, which could be used as targets for future laser treatment of cNF. The imaging session will last 45-60 minutes in each visit and will include 2 visits that are 12 months apart. The study will be conducted at the Beckman Laser Institute and Medical Clinic, University of California, Irvine.

Participation in the study is voluntary.  You can refuse to participate or withdraw from this study at any time.
