On a warm May evening in the bustle and nightlife of downtown Orlando, fans of rock n’ roll gathered at the Mad Cow Theatre for the Second Annual Docs Rock for NF concert. People arrived from all over the central Florida area - including those personally affected by NF, their friends and family, employees from AdventHealth Hospital of Orlando, and the associates and staff of the performing doctors - for a night of food, music, and friendship to support a great cause.

The idea for a concert began as a conversation between Dr. Herbert Newton, neuro-oncologist at AdventHealth Hospital of Orlando, and Kim Bischoff, executive director at the Neurofibromatosis (NF) Network, with the intention of raising funds for neurofibromatosis research and support for those affected by it. The name of the concert was selected to represent the medical vocations of several members of the band Stone Lotus, whose slogan is “Your Brain on Peace, Love and Music.” Stone Lotus is dedicated to using their musicianship to support charitable organizations with a focus on neurological illnesses, neuro-oncology, and cancer.

The event kicked off with a catered appetizer hour from 4Rivers Smokehouse and Jason’s Deli in lobby of the theatre, where attendees enjoyed the company of others interested in the neurofibromatosis cause. The evening continued with Stone Lotus playing two sets of music that fused five decades of classic rock and blues, including classics like Hit Me with Your Best ShotDrift Away, and Rocky Mountain Way, as well as current hits like Ex’s and Oh’s. As the band played through double encores and closed with the infamous Journey hit, Don’t Stop Believin’, Stone Lotus encouraged the crowd to donate to the live fund which would help the NF Network in supplying NF informational packets to newly diagnosed families and individuals.

As the evening came to a close, the silent auction items were awarded to the winners who bid on them throughout the evening. The auction items, gathered by local event chair Melanie Leach, included bundled packages to SAK Comedy Lab and Rubio’s Coastal Grill, a family membership to Frost Museum of Science, an A Day Away kayak tour,  Medieval Times, and dozens of other prizes donated by some of Florida’s most charitable businesses. In total, the evening raised over $10,000 thanks to the concert goers and sponsorships from AdventHealth Hospital of Orlando, William “Von” Ingle, and a generous discount from 4Rivers Smokehouse and Jason’s Deli. The evening was enjoyed by all and plans for the 2020 are already in the works!
