The Neurofibromatosis Network had this year's final #NFStrong Walk for Neurofibromatosis in sunny Orlando, FL on Saturday, November 11 at Jay Blanchard Park. Twelve NF families, their friends, family, and communities came together at the city’s sixth annual walk. The morning was filled with food, games, a raffle, and plenty of new friends. Sunshine Faces were there for the third consecutive year doing extraordinary face painting and tattoo art.
Several runners took off at 10:00 am and walkers followed. A couple of minutes into the event, the rain started pouring but nothing could stop our dedicated network members from joining in the fight against neurofibromatosis and raising awareness.
Volunteers at this year’s event worked hard in the community, and businesses donated some amazing products to an online silent auction that raised over $900. Auction item highlights include a 3-day/2-night deluxe vacation cabin in Pigeon Forge, TN, a Kings Bowl America bowling package for six people, and four tickets to Sea World, Aquatica, and the Orlando Solar Bears hockey game.
Two teams, Zac’s Cru and David’s Warriors, both had pre-walk bake sales and raised $525 and $230. David’s Warriors had a family friend donate $5,000 in honor of David Nejbauer. A father from another team, Team Justin, gives to the NF Network through workplace giving, and Diana, with Team Noreen, donated a handmade blanket to the raffle.
To top off a very successful event, local walk chair Melanie Leach will apply for a matching gift with her company for her bake sale and the walk proceeds, plus, she’ll apply for volunteer grant to earn $10 for every hour she volunteered coordinating this year’s events.
What a difference a community can make when we all pull together and do our part. Thank you, Orlando!
