Washington, D.C. – Drew Sinclair, an equipment manager for the Washington Commanders, seized the opportunity on Sunday, November 30, to raise awareness for a cause close to his heart: neurofibromatosis (NF). Diagnosed with NF Type 1 at a young age, Drew is determined to use his position with the NFL to spotlight this genetic condition, which affects members of his family and 4 million people worldwide.
As part of the Commander's annual initiative that allows players and staff to wear customized footwear representing causes they are passionate about, Drew proudly wore shoes adorned with the NF Network's logo during the game. “My whole family has NF, and I would love to represent the NF Network on the NFL sidelines,” Drewshared. He collaborated with the NF Network to design these special shoes.
Neurofibromatosis has significantly impacted Drew's life. While he experiences only mild symptoms, such as café au lait spots, his mother has faced greater challenges, including surgical removals of growths. “She is why I really want to get involved with you guys and these shoes,” Drew said. “NF has affected my life.”
Drew's passion for football has brought him to his current role with the Washington Commanders. As an equipment manager, he plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety and readiness of players' helmets each week. His journey in sports began as a college Division 3 kicker, which opened doors to internships with a minor league football team and eventually with the Commanders. His dedication and hard work earned him a full-time internship with the team, a position he has continued to develop since 2024.
Drew's initiative is not only a personal mission; it also highlights the Commander's commitment to various charitable causes, showcasing how players and staff can leverage their platform for the greater good. As he prepared to head to the sidelines in his custom footwear, Drew hoped to inspire others and foster a greater understanding of neurofibromatosis within the community.
With the support of his team, Drew encourages others to learn about neurofibromatosis and the NF Network, aiming to create a lasting impact through awareness and education.
