DoD-Funded Study to Evaluate Pain Reduction in Adults with NF1

Frank Buono, PhD, Associate Research Scientist in Psychiatry, has been awarded a three-year grant to evaluate whether a mobile phone application can reduce pain in adults with Neurofibromatosis Type 1 (NF1).

You are invited to participate in a group based focus group to discuss your chronic pain due to Neurofibromatosis Type 1 (NF1). The purpose of this study is to evaluate if a mobile application can help reduce pain severity and interference adults with NF1.  If you agree to participate, you will be asked to complete a short survey, and 1 hour focus group. Upon completing the focus group, you will receive 25-dollar gift card. NF1 is an autosomal dominant genetic condition that affects one in approximately 2,500 people. Over 50 percent of people with NF1 report significant pain and discomfort, and 15 percent use pharmacological interventions. Sixty percent have had at least one surgical procedure in the last year to treat persistent pain.
