Throughout May, the neurofibromatosis (NF) community came together to celebrate NF Awareness Month with events that inspired connection, raised awareness, and strengthened our shared commitment to finding better treatments and, ultimately, a cure for NF. From coast to coast, families, advocates, volunteers, and supporters gathered to show the power of community and the impact we can make together.

The month began in Colorado, where NF Central Plains hosted a gathering at Hudson Gardens in Littleton. Families and individuals affected by NF enjoyed a beautiful spring afternoon sharing lunch, exploring the gardens, and connecting with others who understand the NF journey. It was a wonderful reminder that community support remains one of our greatest strengths.

Mid-month brought one of the season’s most duck-lightful events: Ducky Dash 5K in Wheaton, Illinois. Participants embraced the event’s playful spirit, arriving in creative duck-themed costumes, superhero attire, matching team shirts, and even accompanied by inflatable ducks. Whether running the 5K or joining the fun walk, attendees helped create an atmosphere filled with laughter, energy, and NF pride.

That same weekend, NF Michigan hosted its 2nd Annual Art Show & Fun Walk in Muskegon. Families enjoyed a relaxed community walk while browsing artwork, craft vendors, and a silent auction. What started as a small local gathering is quickly becoming a beloved tradition that raises both awareness and support for NF research.

On the West Coast, NF California welcomed supporters to the 4th Annual Rockin' Hops Music Festival in Vacaville. Over two days, nine bands donated their performances to help raise awareness of neurofibromatosis while festivalgoers enjoyed live music, local vendors, and educational resources. The family-friendly event introduced many attendees to NF for the very first time, helping expand awareness far beyond the immediate NF community.

Meanwhile, NF Tennessee celebrated NF Awareness Month with its annual picnic at Warner Park, bringing together approximately 40 members of the NF community for a day filled with fellowship, food, and recognition. The event highlighted scholarship, arts, and technology grant recipients, showcasing the incredible goals and achievements of individuals living with NF. Attendees also celebrated the recipients of the NF Tennessee Impact Awards, honoring local advocates and researchers whose dedication continues to improve lives. The gathering concluded with the always-popular homemade dessert contest, but the true highlight was the opportunity for families to connect, share experiences, and strengthen friendships within the NF community.

Across the Northeast, NF Northeast's Steps2Cure NF events united supporters in ten communities. Families, friends, volunteers, and advocates gathered to walk, fundraise, and raise awareness, demonstrating the incredible power of people coming together around a common cause. These events continue to fuel hope while supporting critical research and services for the NF community.

As the month drew to a close, the Kansas City community celebrated a major milestone at the KCMO NF Strong 5K. Marking 15 years of impact, the event brought together supporters of all ages for a day of entertainment, raffles, refreshments, and the return of the crowd-favorite foam party. Despite a rainy start to the morning, participants showed up with enthusiasm and determination, proving that a little weather can't dampen the spirit of the NF community.

While we were disappointed that severe weather forced the postponement of the NF Strong Spring Concert in Woodstock, Georgia, the excitement surrounding the event remains strong. Originally scheduled for May 29, the evening of music, community, and fundraising has been rescheduled for July 17, and we look forward to gathering under the stars later this summer.

Beyond the events themselves, NF Awareness Month was marked by countless acts of generosity, advocacy, and education. Communities illuminated landmarks in blue and green, local leaders issued proclamations recognizing World NF Awareness Day, volunteers dedicated countless hours to organizing events, and families courageously shared their stories to help others better understand life with NF.

NF Awareness Month may have come to a close, but the momentum created throughout May continues. From walks and races to concerts, picnics, festivals, and community gatherings, each event highlighted the resilience, generosity, and determination of the NF community. Thank you to every participant, volunteer, donor, sponsor, member organization, and supporter who helped make this month so meaningful. Together, we are raising awareness, advancing research, supporting families, and moving closer to a future without NF.

Next up: Boardman, OH NF Strong 5K on June 13 and the NF Strong Summer Concert in Woodstock, GA on July 17. Check our event calendar link below for other upcoming events.
