Every year from September through January, the world’s largest and most successful annual workplace charity campaign, the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC), puts on events and fairs across the country for federal civilian, postal, and military employees to learn about eligible charities, and the Neurofibromatosis (NF) Network was there.
For over 30 years, the NF Network has been an approved charity, participating in events across the country. Thanks to the generosity of participating federal employees, the NF Network has received donations through CFC since the inception of this organization. This year’s theme is “Show Some Love.”
It was Yvonne’s first year to present the mission of the NF Network to the federal employees, and she was thrilled to attend seven fairs in the Kansas City area. Her visits included an event at the local VA Hospital, the USDA, FAA, as well as a multi-agency building consisting of over 500 working federal employees. Yvonne traveled 69 miles to another VA hospital in Topeka, Kansas’ capitol, and finished the CFC giving season in January with 2 consecutive events - the first at another federal building shared by both the Marines and Navy employees, and the next day at FEMA, the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
At each event, she explained some of the ways NF affects more than 120,000 Americans and 2.5 million people worldwide. She was able to share what the NF Network is doing to assist the community, including helping people find doctors, and doctors reach patients through patient symposiums, run a worldwide online support community called Inspire, put on local events, provide seed grants to researchers, compile and publish the Network Edge, a summary of NF research and clinical trials information, and run a year-round advocacy program to help educate Congress on the continued need for NF research funds, which, since 1996, has successfully helped raised over $300 million in NF research funds.
The federal employees were attentive, inquisitive, and compassionate to our cause. We hope that their interest translates in both new and renewed support and are grateful for the continued opportunity to participate in the Combined Federal Campaign.
