Camp New Friends
A Fun, Supportive Environment for Kids with Neurofibromatosis
Camp New Friends, located near Harrisonburg, Virginia, offers NF youngsters aged 7 to 15 seven days and six nights of summer fun and social connections.
Camp New Friends is one of several Brainy Camps developed by Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, DC. Camp New Friends serves to reduce the stigma and isolation that is often associated with neurofibromatosis. The camp also provides respite for parents.
For several years, these condition-specific camps have proven to be an effective way for children to learn more about their condition and to develop adaptive behaviors. At all Brainy Camps children learn directly from peers and adult volunteers who live effectively with these same health conditions.
Campers participate and choose from activities including hiking, arts and crafts, canoeing, team sports, low and high ropes confidence courses, Camp Olympics, swimming, yoga and drama. Support groups and educational programs promote knowledge, skill development and social connections.
At Camp New Friends children and teens gain a better understanding of their condition, strengths and self-worth.
Camp New Friends is sponsored jointly by Children’s National Medical Center and Neurofibromatosis, Inc.
